The Making of History at Swales Arabian Stud

trishswales

The Zimbabwean bush was green and lush in the prime time of the year when the new stallion took his first few steps on Swales Arabian Stud’s grounds. FS Mozart is on a kind lease from Strydom Arabian Stud and we began using him and our own FS Phantom for the artificial insemination shortly after his arrival. The mares were soon teased to estimate their cycles and the ball began rolling.

About our Stallions for this Season

FS Mozart has an uncannily similar appearance to his magnificent grandfather, *Charismatic BVA (USA). His even figure produces a wonderfully collected, well-rounded Arabian stallion, thus the reason we are so excited to have him be the father of a few of our coming foals this season and the next.

FS Phantom has grown and been broken in on our stud, and has just begun his first breeding experience this season. With profound performance bloodlines backing up his potential and having *Baywatch V (USA) in his ancestry, we are truly expectant to see his abilities blossom in our breeding program and all aspects of training

We quickly formed a routine of teasing first thing in the morning before the rest of the farm work began. It wasn’t long before each of our brood mares had their turn of standing in the crush and being inseminated. Being the first Arabian stud breeders ourselves to artificially inseminate, we successfully covered with fresh semen our brood Arabians, and even a few thoroughbreds, with FS Mozart and our special FS Phantom.

The first mare to be confirmed in foal, was one of our thoroughbred mares, Sunkist, who came from the race track. The next was *HS Esponita (UK) (very special for us as she is one of our top broodmares from Halsdon Stud in the UK). And so the list went on, to have a total of five purebred Arabian mares and three thoroughbred mares in foal within ten weeks, was very exhilarating news for us.

The scenery surrounding us during our first season of breeding and AI was, as that time of year in Zimbabwe always produces, sublime. The flame lilies were showing their splendid flowers, the farm dam was filling up, the macadamias were sprouting new shoots and the bulls joined the cow’s in their paddocks to start the breeding season for our Boran herd. Life on the farm is always full and busy. It’s a blessing.

We are now working towards our open day, which will be part of the inaugural Southern African Arabian Horse Championships including South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. There are two international judges, Benjamin Scott and Alan Preston, (from America and Australia), and the President of the Namibian Arab Horse Society (Dr Barbara Scholz). We are very honoured to be taking part in this event to promote Arabians from Southern Africa to the rest of the world.
